General Breed Info & Availability
What makes Ragdolls a special breed of cat?
Ragdoll cats are known for their gentle, affectionate personalities and striking blue eyes. They’re often referred to as “puppy-like” because they follow their humans from room to room, enjoy cuddling, and even learn tricks. Their relaxed nature makes them one of the best breeds for families and indoor living.
When are Ragdoll kittens available for sale?
We typically have Ragdoll kittens available throughout the year. Availability can vary depending on breeding schedules, so we recommend joining our reservation list to be notified when litters are expected.
How do I reserve a Ragdoll kitten?
To reserve a Ragdoll kitten, fill out our reservation application and place a deposit. We match families with kittens in the order deposits are received, ensuring a fair and thoughtful placement process.
Are Ragdoll breeders required to health-test their cats?
Ethical Ragdoll breeders should always health-test their breeding cats. At Kitten Around Ragdolls, we screen for genetic conditions like HCM and PKD and ensure each cat passes wellness exams before breeding.
What is included when I purchase a Ragdoll kitten?
Each kitten goes home spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and with TICA registration paperwork, Trupanion 30-day pet insurance, 1-year genetic health guarantee, and a lifetime of breeder support.
We have partnered with Trupanion to offer 30 days of free pet insurance (excluding NY and FL). More information on the free plan.
Can I see where the Ragdoll kittens are raised?
Yes—after placing a deposit, you'll be scheduled for a meet-and-greet with your potential kitten and their littermates. Our Ragdoll kittens are raised in our home with constant love, supervision, and hands-on socialization to prepare them for a smooth transition into family life. While we don’t allow general tours, we believe in transparency and are happy to provide updates, photos, and videos throughout your kitten’s development.
Do you offer Ragdoll kitten shipping?
We offer safe and reliable delivery via Flight Nanny to any U.S. state. We also meet families at Sacramento International Airport for convenient in-person pickup.
What are the grooming needs of a Ragdoll?
Ragdolls have silky, semi-long coats that rarely mat. A weekly brushing session is usually enough to keep their fur beautiful and tangle-free.
Are Ragdolls good with children and other pets?
Yes! Ragdolls are incredibly social and do well with kids, other cats, and even cat-friendly dogs. Their laid-back personality makes them ideal family companions.
How much do Ragdoll kittens typically cost?
Prices vary based on pattern, pedigree, and quality. Most pet-quality Ragdoll kittens range from $2,500 to $4,500. Show-quality kittens may cost more due to their exceptional lineage.
Do Ragdolls have any common health issues?
Like all purebred cats, Ragdolls may be predisposed to certain health conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We screen all of our breeding cats to reduce the risk of inherited disease.
When will my Ragdoll reach full size?
Ragdolls mature slowly and often don’t reach their full size until 3–4 years of age. Males can weigh 15–20 lbs, while females average 10–15 lbs.
What support do breeders provide after adoption?
We offer lifetime support. Whether you have questions about food, litter, behavior, or health, we’re always here to help guide you through every stage of your kitten’s life. We also love to receive updates and pictures!
Can I meet multiple litters or only one?
If we have more than one litter available, we’re happy to introduce you to multiple kittens to help find the best personality match for your home.
Appearance, Personality & Home Prep
What colors and patterns do Ragdoll cats come in?
Ragdolls come in a variety of beautiful colors and patterns, including seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. Common patterns include colorpoint, mitted, bicolor, and lynx. We specialize in a wide range of these, including blue lynx and blue mitted Ragdoll kittens.
Are Ragdoll kittens hypoallergenic?
No cat breed is truly hypoallergenic, but Ragdolls tend to produce less of the protein (Fel d 1) that triggers allergies. Some allergy sufferers tolerate Ragdolls better than other breeds, but it’s best to test sensitivity before committing.
What is the difference between pet quality, show quality, and breeder quality Ragdolls?
Pet-quality kittens have minor cosmetic traits that don’t meet strict show standards but make loving companions. Show-quality Ragdolls have ideal markings and structure. Breeder-quality kittens meet additional genetic and pedigree criteria for use in breeding programs.
How can I tell if a Ragdoll breeder is ethical?
Look for a Ragdoll cat breeder who health-tests their cats, raises kittens in-home, provides contracts and guarantees, and is a member of a recognized cat association like TICA or CFA. Avoid breeders who don’t do proper health testing or sell unaltered kittens without vetting.
Do Ragdolls get along with other cats?
Yes! Ragdolls are peaceful and generally do well in multi-cat households. They enjoy companionship and often form strong bonds with other pets.
What age do Ragdoll kittens go home?
Our Ragdoll kittens go home between 12–14 weeks of age, after they are spayed/neutered and fully weaned, vaccinated, and socialized.
Why do Ragdoll kittens cost more than other cats?
As a reputable Ragdoll breeder, we invest heavily in health testing, proper veterinary care, premium food, genetic screening, and socialization. The higher price reflects the quality, support, and ethical practices behind each kitten.
What is early spay/neuter (ESN) and why do breeders do it?
ESN is the practice of spaying/neutering kittens at 10–12 weeks old. It helps prevent accidental breeding, reduces behavioral issues, and allows kittens to recover more easily at a young age. All of our kittens are altered before going home.
Can I breed my Ragdoll kitten later?
We do not offer breeding rights with pet kittens. If you’re an established or aspiring breeder, please contact us about joining our mentorship and breeding program.
Do you offer retired adult Ragdoll cats for adoption?
Yes! Occasionally, we have retired show or breeding Ragdolls available to loving homes. These cats are typically 2–6 years old, fully vetted, and still have many years of love to give.
What is a lynx point Ragdoll?
A lynx point Ragdoll has tabby (striped) markings overlaying their base color. Blue lynx point and seal lynx point are popular variations and often have striking “M” markings on their foreheads and beautiful eye stripes.
Do Ragdoll cats need a special diet?
Ragdolls thrive on a high-protein, low-carb diet. We recommend premium grain-free wet and dry food for healthy weight and coat condition. Always ensure fresh water is available.
How can I prepare my home for a new Ragdoll kitten?
Kitten-proof your space, provide a clean litter box, scratching posts, food and water bowls, and soft bedding. Be ready to spend time bonding through play and gentle handling.
Do Ragdolls prefer dry or wet food?
We recommend a mix of both. High-quality wet food supports hydration and urinary health, while dry food helps with dental care. Always consult with your vet about dietary needs.
What litter box and litter do you recommend for Ragdolls?
We suggest a large, uncovered litter box and a low-dust, non-toxic, unscented pea husk litter. Ragdolls appreciate clean spaces and can be picky if their box isn’t maintained.
How much attention do Ragdoll kittens need?
Ragdoll kittens are social and need daily interaction, playtime, and cuddles. They’re happiest in homes where they’re not left alone for long periods.
Can Ragdolls be left alone during the day?
Yes, but not for extended periods. If you work long hours, consider adopting two kittens or providing plenty of enrichment like toys, window perches, and puzzle feeders.
Are Ragdolls indoor-only cats?
Yes. Ragdolls are trusting and lack the street smarts of other breeds. For safety, they should be kept indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures like catios.
Do Ragdolls like to travel?
Many Ragdolls tolerate car travel and even enjoy it if introduced early. They’re calm by nature but always use a carrier and make them feel secure when traveling.
How do I introduce a Ragdoll kitten to other pets?
Introduce slowly, using scent swapping and supervised visits. Give your kitten time to adjust. Ragdolls are easygoing, but every animal needs space to adapt.
Physical Traits, Training, & Breeder Info
What’s the personality difference between male and female Ragdolls?
Both genders are affectionate, but males tend to be more playful and outgoing, while females can be slightly more reserved and independent. Personality varies more by individual than by gender.
Are blue eyes guaranteed in all Ragdolls?
All pointed Ragdolls, including mitted and bicolor patterns, will have blue eyes. However, mink and sepia Ragdolls—though popular—are not recognized by TICA and may have aqua or green eyes. We breed only traditional blue-eyed Ragdolls.
How do I tell if my Ragdoll is purebred?
A registered Ragdoll breeder will provide TICA or CFA registration papers proving lineage. Purebred Ragdolls have consistent features: soft, semi-long fur, blue eyes, and calm, people-focused personalities.
What’s the best way to bathe a Ragdoll?
Use a cat-safe, breed-specific shampoo 2–3 days before shows or as needed. Gently brush first to remove tangles. Rinse thoroughly and use a blow dryer or drying box to finish. We offer Ragdoll-specific grooming tips to all new owners.
How do I register my Ragdoll kitten with TICA?
You’ll receive TICA registration paperwork when you bring your kitten home. You can register online or by mail using the breeder slip provided.
Can I show my pet Ragdoll in cat shows?
Yes! Spayed and neutered Ragdolls can compete in the Alter class. It’s a great way to bond with your cat and connect with the Ragdoll community. We love mentoring new exhibitors.
What is a “bicolor” Ragdoll?
A bicolor Ragdoll has an inverted white “V” on the face, a pink nose, and white legs, chest, and belly. Their body color appears on the ears, tail, and parts of the back. This pattern is especially striking and very popular among Ragdoll lovers. Many of our Ragdoll kittens for sale are bicolor, with soft, plush coats and ideal markings for show or pet homes.
What is a “colorpoint” Ragdoll?
Colorpoint Ragdolls have darker color on the ears, face, paws, and tail, with no white markings. Their bodies are lighter in color, creating a beautiful contrast. Common colors include seal, blue, lilac, and chocolate. Colorpoint is the original and most classic Ragdoll cat pattern, known for its elegant and symmetrical appearance.
What is a “mitted” Ragdoll?
Mitted Ragdolls have white paws, a white chin, and often a white belly stripe. They may also have a blaze on the forehead. This pattern is popular for its adorable sock-like markings.
How long do Ragdoll cats live?
With proper care, Ragdolls live 12–16 years or longer. Regular vet visits, quality nutrition, and a safe indoor lifestyle contribute to longevity.
Do Ragdoll kittens shed a lot?
Ragdolls are moderate shedders. They lose more fur during seasonal changes, but weekly brushing helps keep shedding under control.
How can I keep my Ragdoll’s coat fluffy and soft?
Regular brushing, proper nutrition, and occasional baths keep their coats plush and silky. A grooming comb and slicker brush are great tools to maintain that signature Ragdoll fluff.
What toys are best for Ragdolls?
Ragdolls enjoy feather wands, puzzle feeders, kicker toys, and anything interactive. They love playtime with their humans and will often play fetch like a dog.
Do Ragdolls need scratching posts?
Yes—scratching is healthy and natural. Provide vertical and horizontal scratchers to keep their claws in check and save your furniture.
Is crate training necessary for kittens?
While not required, crate training can help with safe transport, vet visits, and building confidence. We recommend positive association with carriers from an early age.
What vaccinations do Ragdoll kittens need?
Core vaccines include FVRCP and rabies. We follow a vet-approved vaccination schedule and provide medical records with every kitten.
What is HCM and how does it affect Ragdolls?
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heart condition that can affect Ragdolls. Ethical breeders DNA test all breeding cats for the HCM mutation and remove carriers from breeding programs.
Do you offer a health guarantee?
Yes—all of our kittens come with a written health guarantee covering genetic conditions. We stand by the health of our kittens and our transparent breeding practices.
Can I visit your cattery before buying a kitten?
For the health and safety of our cats, kittens, and families, we do not offer in-home visits. Young kittens are especially vulnerable to illness, and limiting outside exposure helps us maintain a safe, clean environment. We’re happy to provide photos, videos, and live video calls so you can meet your kitten virtually and see where they’re being raised with love and care.
What’s the process to apply for a kitten?
Start by filling out our kitten reservation form and placing a non-refundable deposit. This deposit secures your place in line to choose from current or upcoming litters. If you have any questions before reserving one of our Ragdoll kittens, please don’t hesitate to email us—we’re happy to help you make an informed decision before committing.
What’s the best age for kids to get a kitten?
Ragdolls are ideal for families with children. If you have children under 5, we recommend supervision and guidance on gentle handling, so that younger children can enjoy Ragdolls too.
Can Ragdoll cats live in apartments?
Absolutely! Ragdolls adapt well to apartment living. As long as they have toys, vertical space, and plenty of attention, they thrive in smaller homes.
Do you sell breeding rights?
We rarely offer breeding rights and only to approved programs with a history of ethical practices. If you’re interested in becoming a Ragdoll breeder, please inquire about mentorship opportunities.
